BURT 100 RACE MANUAL

Intro

Once a year, BURT holds a low-key ‘race’ that is intended to celebrate everything that is long distance trail running; self-sufficiency, community support, and the reward of completing a challenging course. It is an opportunity for us to share the amazing trails and community we have in Bainbridge Island with our fellow runners. Our goal for our race is to make it possible to step into the sport without worry of high entry fees, travel costs, or the pressure to compete. Our focus is on everyone, not just the fast and elite. We are simply runners enjoying the very sport that has brought us together.

Location and Parking Information

The race will start and end in Battle Point Park (11299 Arrow Point Dr NE). You can use this link in the map below for accurate navigation. You will need to enter from the Arrow Point Drive side of the park. There is plenty of parking and the closest lot to the start will be on your left near the pickleball courts. The check in and the start line are located at the shelter across from the pickleball courts.

There is no overnight camping or sleeping in vehicles allowed. You are responsible for properly parking in the lot to avoid parking fines. Local authorities have been notified that vehicles will be in the lot after hours.

Course Description

The BURT course is a 55K loop that links a multitude of Bainbridge Island parks and trails, with 70+% (and growing) of the course being on trails. All three distances utilize the same loop. The 100M is 3 loops, the 110K is 2 loops, and the 55K is 1 loop.

Each loop comprises over 4,000 feet of elevation with a 'vert crux' of deceptively challenging switchbacks in Gazzam Lake. This thoroughly-marked course is a mix of single-track trails, groomed park trails, and road. A limited number of well-stocked aid stations are provided. You can expect water crossings, mud, gravel, puddles, rocks, roots, and dirt.

IMPORTANT: There are sections of the BURT that are private and only accessible on race day. If a trail section is marked as private, please don't run it until race day.

Go to this Strava route to download the course gpx file and find an interactive map online here.

Course Marking

The course is marked with green and yellow arrows at turns, signs at road crossings, and blue and yellow confidence markers about every quarter mile. These all have reflective tape and tabs on them for those of you running after sunset. We have experienced course sabotage in the past and will try to sweep these areas often, but it’s your responsibility to navigate the course correctly.

Gear

  • This is a cupless race; all runners will be required to carry some type of refillable hydration system

  • Working headlamps or flashlights are required for all runners

  • High visibility clothing and reflective gear is highly encouraged

  • 100 Milers are requested to carry a tracking device, provide us a link to track, and a mobile phone. We would appreciate it if the 110K runners provided their phone # as well.

  • Trail shoes are recommended, poles are allowed

Aid Stations

Each loop will have 5 aid stations with a selection of gels, soda, snacks, and water. The aid stations layout per loop is as follows:

Overnight Aid Stations

In the event we do not have enough volunteers to have someone at the aid stations throughout the night, large tote bins will be left at the aid station locations. These will be filled with emergency supplies, snacks, and water. Runners may help themselves and we ask that the lids are securely closed because we have plenty of trash pandas on the island.

Restrooms

Public restrooms are located throughout the course so there are plenty of places to stop if nature calls. Please use them so we can continue to have the BURT 100 in the future.

  • Battle Point Park

  • Hilltop

  • Gazzam

  • Shel Chelb

  • Blakely Harbor

  • Fort Ward

Drop Bags

Drop bags will be allowed at Schel Chelb aid station and multi-loop runners can leave a drop bag at HQ. Bags can be dropped off the morning of the race at the start line, no later than 7:30AM. Please pack your items as compactly as possible in a single bag and clearly mark it with your name. Bags will be returned to the start/finish line at some point on Saturday afternoon or be available at the awards ceremony on Sunday. If you would like yours sooner, you are welcome to grab it from Shel Chelb on your own. You are responsible for collecting your own drop bag.

Pacers

You can have a pacer at any time that is safe for them to do so and they do not impede traffic by parking, obstruct the trail and trail users, or trespass on private property. Vehicles must be parked in authorized parking spots. They must get to your meetup point on their own.

Crew

You can have your crew meet you at any point on the course that is safe for them to do so and does not impede traffic, obstruct the trail and trail users, or trespass on private property. Vehicles must be parked in authorized parking spots.

Dropping Out

You must call or text the race director and notify them you are dropping. If you drop without notifying we will have to start a search and that’s not cool.

  1. If you drop, you will need to arrange your own transportation back to your car.

  2. If you are injured or ill to the point where you can’t run or walk, notify the race director and we will try and send help.

  3. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911.
